Michala with Balou

For 10 years Michala lived in the south of Spain and at first she concentrated on horses in all her spare time. Almost daily she rode in the mountains on her way she came across numerous farms.
Passing all those farms she couldn’t help noticing all the dogs that roamed around or were kept in old ruins, sheds, shelters and places alike.

Later, as a vet.-student in Denmark , she once visited friends in Spain , and here she was given her first galgo, (in fact a female – so a galga), Tessa – only 5 weeks old.

Tessa’s mother was so weak and ill, that she didn’t have enough milk to nurse her puppies. So for Tessa there was only 2 options: Either to be taken from her mum at a very young age and live with Michala or die.
Fortunately she stayed with Michala and was given life.
This little story was actually the beginning of the entire ‘GALGO-PROJECT’ in Denmark .

Because of Tessa, Michaela began to research as to what really happened to the dogs in Spain, and suddenly one day she received an approach from Cristina Garcia Moreno, who was representing the Spanish organisation ‘Galgos sin Fronteras’ (‘Galgos across/without Frontiers’) in which she asked for help to fight the galgo-problem in Spain

At that time Michaela had passed her final vet.-exams and threw right away heart and soul into the project and initiated the Danish organisation ‘Galgos in Need’ on July 12 2004 .

-         To find homes for dogs that so desperately need it.

-         Politically to help put pressure on the Spanish government, so that there in time will be changes in the legislation, so the atrocities against the dogs can be stopped.

If you ask Michaela, why she chose to help the galgos, her answer is:

‘Because right here, I believe I can make a difference’.

It is now up to all of us to help continuing the work, and we suppose that we can agree on the motto:

TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

THE PURPOSE  OF ’GALGOS IN NEED’.

-         To promote/arrange adoption of galgos, that are abandoned, mistreated and/or left at shelters in Spain .

 -         To promote the political work which aims to improve the existing legislations and possibilities for sanctions regarding breeding, keeping, and the using of galgos.  

-         To promote information about the living-conditions for the galgos in Spain .  

-         To organise collections and launch appeals in order to help the existing animal-welfare organisations in Spain regarding veterinary-bills, medication, food, payment for stays at foster-homes, shelters etc.  

-        To propagate the knowledge and interest for the breed.
